Japanese Assortments









Just another rummage through the rare books at the Japanese Diet Library. If you put 斎 into the search box I think the first entry in the first result leads to some scrapbooks, where a couple of the above illustrations can be found. I posted some images from (?)other scrapbooks previously but didn't know how to find my way back. It should be a sport.

Exhibition of Japanese prints by Yoshitoshi (circa 1867-1880) in England plus an excellent page on the arcane woodblock printing techniques, including using textured cloth and mica.

Got this link from a site called http://www.sil.si.edu/SILPublications/Online-Exhibitions/intro.htm awkward to use but fascinating and useful if you can get it to work.

Thanks Joel. The search page for the Smithsonian exhibitions is in the sidebar. I love it and only find it awkward when my brain can't come up with a useful search term. Put 'book' in there and see the results.

And that Fitzmuseum site is good - I *think* I'd seen it before and there is of course no shortage of Japanese woodblock prints online. I like this exhibition because it points out the printing techniques and nuances of effect. Cheers!

Thanks for this post! I'm currently researching ukiyo-e and horimono artwork for an art project of my own and this stuff is not easy to find!
