'Insignia ... XI. Insignia Nobilium Veronensium, Vicentinorum - BSB Cod.icon. 276' is online at the Bavarian State Library. There are perhaps fifty illustrated pages in total.

This album of heraldic devices or family crests of the noble families of Verona and Vicenza is one of a series of fifteen manuscripts prepared for Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria in the 16th century. So far, only two of these works have been digitised. The other one was featured in a post from 2007, Insignia Neapolitanorum.

The catalogue page (in German) [trans.] offers little by way of background.

My new word for the day: escutcheon.

One of these days I will get around to adding a 'heraldry' tag to the delicous links.

Now I'm wondering what those animals are with the sort of winged-dragony top and the sea-creature-like tail end. It seems to me Air France used to have one as its logo, something like around the time I was hatched (their website doesn't currently show any such thing). Ah yes, photo evidence! No, I don't obsessively look things up, really. I still don't know what the animal is called.

Taa.
I spent way too long not (really) finding the name of the sea-dragon-thingy; although I did find an art deco version of the Air France symbol.

escutcheon - as in "so-and-so is a blot on the family e."

The Air-France beastie looks more sort of horsey - nearest thing I could find was the Cockatrice

How do I apply for membership in a world where people have nothing better to do than sit around and think about what their family crest should be? I think I could make designing my crest a full time occupation.

Hmm, thought you were Australian, not Nigerian (apologies to the average Nigerian reader).

Love the art deco Air France item. Still mystified what it's called. In the night I wondered if it was a hippogriff but remembered they are not aquatic. (I always think of the bit in Calderon de la Barca's Life Is a Dream that refers to headlong hippogriffs, not that I've read the play in many a year.)

Peacay, I'm glad to see you are branching out into the heraldry business. I hope it will prove lucrative for you. I confess I was a little suspicious at first, but then I noticed that you signed your response "honest regards" so I was greatly reassured.

The check is in the mail, but all I can say is that for $2,000 I hope my crest turns out to be a real fancy one, with lions or eagles or something.

Best regards,

D.
