Erbario di Firenze

This (anonymous I assume) Florentine manuscript from the latter part of the 15th century is online at the Biblioteca Riccardiana in Florence via F. Datini. So it predates Aldrovandus (Ulisse Aldrovandi).

  1. Its’s very interesting to see those head-shaped roots in an earlier manuscript than Aldrovandi’s, which leads me to wonder just how far back this particular imagery goes…

  2. Yeah, I was surprised when I saw the dates. I'm not really sure how to find out the history of the imagery. I'll have to think about that.
Hippocrates wrote the first herbal in 400bc I believe.

I'm not so sure about where the timeline goes from there. Also, medicine/alchemy/horticulture get quite mixed up of course - in terms of searching.

So I'm not even sure what my guess would be either in relation to the origin of such plant illustration abstractions.
