Its’s very interesting to see those head-shaped roots in an earlier manuscript than Aldrovandi’s, which leads me to wonder just how far back this particular imagery goes…
Yeah, I was surprised when I saw the dates. I'm not really sure how to find out the history of the imagery. I'll have to think about that. Hippocrates wrote the first herbal in 400bc I believe.
I'm not so sure about where the timeline goes from there. Also, medicine/alchemy/horticulture get quite mixed up of course - in terms of searching.
So I'm not even sure what my guess would be either in relation to the origin of such plant illustration abstractions.
